10 Strategies For Getting Healthy
The phrase “getting healthy” can be quite intimidating. It doesn’t happen over night, it takes hard work, dedication, and perseverance, it requires you to step out of your comfort zone, etc. etc. It is these reasons, among others, that people have such a difficult time getting in shape and healthy.
At some point, however, the excuses have to stop and you must take control of your health. Once you make that decision and stick with it, you will realize it is ALL worth it!
To help you get started, I have put together a list of 10 simple strategies that you can use to start getting healthy right now. If you follow these strategies, your health and body will start to change for the better:
1. Clear Out The Junk
One of the best things you can do to avoid eating junk food is to clear it all out. This means spring cleaning has come early at your household and you should clean out those cabinets and refrigerators. If you don’t have junk food in the house, there is a 100% guarantee that you won’t eat it while you are home.
Not having junk foods at home, will force you to have to make an effort to eat badly instead of having it right at your fingertips. Many times just doing this will solve your problem of eating too much junk at home. Fill your cabinets and refrigerator with good, healthy foods and eat those often.
2. Find a good nutrition plan, then go shopping
I have written multiple articles on nutrition, so go back and revisit those for some nutrition plan ideas. The plans are very simple, so pick one and stick with it. Once you have your plan picked out, write a grocery list and go buy your foods for the week.

3. Plan ahead and cook in bulk
One of the most convenient and surefire ways to eat healthy is to plan ahead and cook in bulk. You must plan out your meals and always have healthy foods on hand. This means cooking your foods in bulk so you never have the option to go eat junk. Having food on hand will eliminate eating out and will make eating healthy very easy.
4. Learn to love water
Drinking calories is one of the biggest downfalls that I see when it comes to weight gain. People do not realize how many calories they drink each day, and the majority of the time these drinks are being stored as straight fat.
Also be sure to not fall for the “zero calories” or “diet” mumbo-jumbo either. Things such as diet sodas and zero calories drinks can play a big role in adding fat as well. It is best to avoid them and go with the true zero calorie drink, water!
Focus on drinking water with all meals and throughout the day and you will start seeing great results. If you need to, black coffee and unsweetened teas are also ok in moderation.
5. Find a partner
Having a parter is a great way to keep you motivated while trying to get healthy. Hold each other accountable making sure you are sticking to your plan to get healthy. This means encouraging each other to eat better, workout hard, walk more, sleep better, etc.
6. Start Walking
I hear many people say that they “just don’t like working out” and this is the reason they are not in shape. Although I feel this is a terrible excuse, you know by now that getting healthy all starts with nutrition. With that said, if your nutrition is right on point, then take the next step and add in a daily walk.
I find that when people start eating healthy and walking, the results they start seeing will prompt them to start exercising more in the gym (like lifting weights or doing higher intensity workouts). So if you are someone who does not enjoy working out, start out by just walking 30-60 minutes per day.
7. Make movement a requirement
The more time you spend moving, the less time you spend sitting. Focus on getting more movement into your day in any way that you can. This may mean parking further away from your building, take a morning and/or evening walk, standing up to stretch and move every hour at your desk, etc. Make the effort to move more, simple as that.
8. Step out of your comfort zone
Getting healthy will require you to do things you are not used to. Whether this be eating new foods, doing new exercises, going into different parts of the gym (like the weight area), etc. You have got to learn to just not care what others think when it comes to get healthy.
Who cares if you are lifting the bar the first day in the weight room? In a matter of weeks you will be much stronger, more fit, and more experienced. Everyone who has ever lifted or worked out had their first day at some point. You are going into your workouts to get better and more healthy, so step out of your comfort zone and get the results you are looking for.
9. Focus on diet first, then exercise
The maximum amount of time I recommend spending in the gym is 1 hour. This means you still have 23 hours left to treat your body properly. It is during this time that you must be focused on getting healthy and eating wisely.
For the majority of people (if not all), it is outside the gym where they kill their results. The results you see happen outside of the gym, not in the gym. That is why it is so important to focus on your diet first and workouts second.
At minimum, 80% of the results you see will come from your diet.
10. Have Fun
Getting healthy and getting fit is supposed to be fun. In the beginning you may not find it to be this way, but as you start feeling better and better you will start having more fun. Getting results and having success is the best way to start liking something new.
If you have not made the desicion yet to start getting healthy, I encourage you to start today! As the old saying goes, “there is no better time to start than now!”
